January is Unchain-A-Dog Month It shouldn’t happen to “man’s best friend,” but it does. Take a drive down many country roads and city streets, and you’ll see them—dogs left to spend their entire lives in “solitary confinement,” trapped at the end of a chain or in a small pen. Learn More |

January 5 National Bird Day Each year thousands of birds are sold into the pet trade to individuals who are under the mistaken impression that a bird will make a perfect pet. Eventually, whether due to frustration, disinterest, or concern, many people attempt to rid themselves of the responsibility of caring for their birds. Unfortunately, few of these birds will find a loving home, and most will spend their days isolated and confined to their cages. Others will bounce from home to home as their caretakers tire of them, and some may be abandoned at local shelters and birds rescues, set free to fend for themselves or euthanized. Learn More |

February 14 Pet Theft Awareness Day Nearly two million companion animals are stolen each year. Some are taken under false pretense through "free to a good home" ads, abducted from their yards, or are taken from humane shelters through a practice called pound seizure. These animals are then sold to research laboratories, dog-fighting rings, or puppy mills, where they are abused and often killed. Learn More |

February 26 Spay Day USA About every eight seconds one cat or dog is euthanized in a U.S. shelter. Often these animals are the offspring of cherished family pets, even purebreds. Maybe someone's cat or dog got out just that one time or maybe the litter was intentional, but efforts to find enough good homes failed. Spay/neuter is the only permanent, 100 percent effective method of birth control for dogs and cats and a proven way to reduce the vast numbers of animals who are born only to die prematurely and without a family who loves them. |

May 12-18 Bear Awareness Week Bear Awareness Week is devoted to increasing awareness about the black and grizzly bears of Washington. As bears begin to emerge from winter sleep, they can be assured that Washington residents are going to be a little more informed about them this year, thanks to a new official Bear Awareness Week proclamation signed by Governor Christine Gregoire. “Black bears and grizzly bears face very different problems here in Washington”, says Chris Morgan, ecologist and director of the Grizzly Bear Outreach Project, the organization at the center of Bear Awareness Week activities. “As more and more people move into black bear habitat, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for these adaptable creatures to ignore temptations”. Temptations such as human garbage, bird seed, and fruit trees. “But for the super-rare grizzly bear it is a more grave concern - avoiding extinction”, he added. |

June is Adopt-A-Cat Month Every spring and summer, animal shelters receive dozens of litters of kittens. These kittens are in addition to all the adult cats who find their way into the shelters. Animal shelters don’t have the space or the resources to take care of that many animals. Out of the millions of cats who enter shelters each year, only about one in four are adopted into loving homes. In fact, most of them -- more than 70 percent of them -- must be euthanized. July is Adopt a Rescued Rabbit Month Margo DeMello, President and Executive Director of the Richmond-based HRS, explains that the timing of this educational effort couldn't be better. "Mid-summer is always the toughest season for rabbit rescue organizations all over the country," she explains. "We are flooded with calls about unwanted and abandoned rabbits - many of which were babies purchased as Easter gifts just a few months ago, by families who didn't know how to care for and interact with them. Now the kids have grown tired of them, and thousands of them are being dropped off at already-crowded shelters." This month, our volunteers will be putting in extra hours to educate the public and to adopt rabbits out to caring homes. Learn More |

August 16 International Homeless Animals' Day The Candlelight Vigils, perhaps more than any other event, dramatize the significance of the overpopulation problem, and why the killing must stop. Dedicated shelter and animal control personnel, who must kill the animals at the cost of their own grief, plan beautiful, moving vigils. Many read the names of the animals and the dates they were killed from identification collars used in shelters. Music, prayers, readings and speeches are also often part of the vigils. Learn More |
